BEIJING—Chinese authorities identified 5,090 new coronavirus cases, a new jump in their daily tally that has stirred concerns over the trajectory of the outbreak and raised fresh worries over whether China is offering an accurate appraisal of the epidemic’s scope.
On Thursday and Friday alone, China’s National Health Commission added about 20,000 newly confirmed cases to its official count, bringing the total number of patients infected by the coronavirus to more than 63,000, as of the end of Thursday.
